How to: Market Your Music During Coronavirus Lockdown

Artists and musicians worldwide have been struggling with the loss of income derived from public performance and searching for new ways to market their music. With that in mind, Believe, one of the biggest distribution/services companies for independent artists and labels, has released a guide entitled "Creative Marketing Playbook". The Playbook offers advice to artists in areas such as social media best practices, as well as streaming and playlisting strategy. We’ve compiled some of its highlights below:

  1. Use Pre-saves and Pre-adds for your upcoming releases
These functions help improve your release's chances to be picked-up by the algorithms that the platforms use to create organic listens and exposure to new fans. They also help build hype prior to the release, maximizing your release date audience, and help collect fan data for remarketing activities.

  2. Focus on “Mood” playlists which fit in with the Coronavirus situation
Make your own playlists to remind your fans that you are thinking of them in these difficult times. Some examples are “Mood in Confinement", "What I listen to at home”, etc. Such playlists are the most popular right now, and your songs could get a lot more plays if included in them.

  3. Post more often
Believe lists the following numbers as being ideal for each platform:
Facebook: 3 posts max per week
Twitter: 10 tweets max per day
Snapchat: 5-10 stories max per day
Instagram: 1 post max per day and 5-10 stories max per day
    TikTok: 2 posts per day

  4. Share your passions
Your fans love to know more about you, so create closeness to them by sharing your passions outside of music, such as your favorite tracks, films, etc. You could even livestream and do activities with your fans, such as exercising or playing video games online.

  5. Plan regular meetings
Maintain a strong relationship with your fans by creating regular meetings with them, such as sharing a cover song every Tuesday, doing a livestream on Instagram every Sunday, etc.

  6. Participate in challenges
As everyone is confined at home, it’s the perfect time to use social networks to be creative and participate in challenges that help relieve the stress and anxiety from the current circumstances. You could create your own dance challenge using one of your songs and encourage your fans to replicate it.

  7. Boost ads budget during this period
There has been a significant increase in the amount of content people watch while staying at home. This means they are much more likely to engage with your content than usual. In addition to that, advertising costs are considerably lower due to advertising campaigns cut off.
