Utilizing Instagram Reels As A Way To Promote Music

What would you do if you woke up tomorrow and Tik Tok was banned for use in your respective country? If you’re a musician, you’d likely feel a sense of anxiety start to set in unless you had a plan B to promote your music. Luckily, Instagram has released a new feature ‘Reels’

Reels is quite similar to Tik Tok considering it allows users to record and edit 15- second video clips that are arranged alongside music. In addition, it is quite simple for somebody to share their finished product on their Instagram story, Reels Tab on their profile or on the Explore page. The similar trends that have been praised on Tik- Tok are making their rounds on Reels which becomes beneficial for musicians looking to promote new music. For instance, Miley Cyrus announced that her new single “Midnight Sky” is set to release on August 14th. She turned to Reels as a tool in promoting and creating buzz around this new song. She first uploaded what appears to be sneak peeks of the possible music video for “Midnight Sky”. In addition, she turned to her fans and gave them the opportunity to upload edits for the song, as well as display the messages she sent fans from her “secret” phone number. If a musician is interested in promoting their music on Reels they should take a note out of Miley Cyrus’s book or any other musicians that has been promoting their new music by including the following:

  • Post sneak peeks of the promo video or music video for the new song

  • Allow fans the opportunity to make their own edits

  • Once the song is released, create a simple but fun choreographed dance number that allows for a new group of people to participate but also further promote the song
