Picking the Right Manager for You

Building a team when you are starting out can help solidify your career in the entertainment industry. The first person you would need on your team is either a manager or a lawyer. If the lawyer you hire is well connected, they might be able to put you through the right channels and help get your music heard. And although it’s easier to get your music heard through a lawyer, the energy and most importantly the time a manager will devote to help build your career is definitely worth thinking over.

Choosing who you can entrust your work with is something to be mindful of as this person will be responsible for helping you (the artist) with things like songs, writing, booking and so forth. A good manager puts your interests over their own because they know, that if you succeed, they succeed too.

A prominent manager can definitely help you attain your goals. Over the course of their career, a powerful manager will have definitely built relationships with many artists, labels, producers, directors and writers within the industry. They are probably on a first-name basis with the who’s who in the entertainment industry and can get more done for you in a 2-minute phone call than a manager who has been in the industry for over 10 years. However, there is a possibility that the managers’ interest and attention to your career might depend on the amount of money you’re churning in.

Finding a manager who is driven to bring your vision to life of what success means to you, is really the key here. The manager you pick needs to believe in you. They need to believe in your music, in your identity, and your personality. They need to see the star in you even when you don’t. And when you make mistakes, they need to guide you and help you learn from them.
